Working in regular collaboration with industry partners and the US Department of Defence, Thales is a significant contributor to defence and civil markets in the United States.
- In the Defence sector, Thales now supplies interoperable tactical communication systems to all branches of the US military. As a part of Thales's joint venture with DRS Technologies, DRS Sonar Systems, Thales is also producing AN/AQS-22 Airborne Low-Frequency Sonar (ALFS) for the US Navy's MH-60R multi-mission helicopters. This FLASH sonar will be the MH-60R's primary anti-submarine sensor system providing submarine tracking, localisation and classification capabilities. ThalesRaytheonSystems (TRS), the first-ever transatlantic joint venture in the defence sector formed by Thales and Raytheon in 2001, continues to exhibit global leadership in integrated air defence systems. ThalesRaytheonSystems was recently awarded multiple contracts by the US Army's Communications and Electronics Command and Aviation Missile Command for its Firefinder weapon locating and Sentinel air defence battlefield radar systems. In addition, the US Marine Corps has awarded a contract to TRS for 16additional AN/TPQ-46 Firefinder radars. TRS is a major supplier to NATO, particularly for the large-scale Air Command and Control System (ACCS) programme.
- In Aerospace, Thales is supplying avionics suites and equipment to the major aircraft manufacturers, including Boeing and Sikorsky. The TopOwl helicopter helmet-mounted display has been selected to participate in the demonstration of Lockheed Martin's MPNVS(Modernised Pilot Night Vision System) to different US military organisations. Thales is also proud of the success of its in-flight entertainment business based in Irvine, California, which has earned a 45% share of the world market as well as almost 80% penetration on the Boeing 787 programme. hales currently provides 90% of the ground-based navigation infrastructure for US national airspace system. As a member of the winning ITT team, Thales has secured the contract to supply ADS-B (Automatic Dependant Surveillance-Broadcast) technology as part of a comprehensive air traffic modernisation programme led by the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States. Under this contract, Thales will provide 1,600ground stations and multi-sensor fusion software to create an integrated air picture and will be deployed across the US.
- In US Security markets, Thales recently launched the first Multiband Multimode Land Mobile Radio for government agencies and first responders. This new technology named Liberty will allow Federal, State, Local and U.S. Department of Defence agencies to communicate across all public safety bands using a single portable radio. Additionally, Thales continues to work with state and local transportation authorities in several key markets on rail signalling projects including the New York PATH train, the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project outside of Washington, D.C. and the automated people mover system in Las Vegas.
