Thales and the Samsung Group joined forces in 2000 to create Samsung Thales Co. Ltd (STC), initially to meet the requirements of the country's armed forces. Today the joint company has more than 1,300 employees.

Business operations
Samsung Thales has a record of success, particularly in air Defence with the KSAM short-range missile system programme. STC has also supplied combat systems and sensors. In addition, the company was recently selected as the infrastructure provider for the South Korean military's future broadband communication network. In cooperation with STX Engine Co. Ltd of South Korea, Thales will develop and deliver a new sonar suite for the country's next-generation submarines. STC has also been awarded a study contract for the TICN next-generation network programme Tactical Information Communication Network) and appointed as prime contractor for the Intelligence Target Acquisition System programme, positioning the company favourably for the future UAV-based surveillance and reconnaissance programme.
In 2008, STC set up a customer care centre in Daejeon and broke ground on its new R&D facility in Yongin. In Aerospace, Korean Airlines has chosen Top Series in-flight entertainment systems for its Boeing and Airbus fleets. In the Space sector, Thales Alenia Space was prime contractor for the Koreasat 5 dual-purpose commercial and military communication satellite programme. In the Security sector, Thales has signed an agreement with Rotem Company to provide a SelTrac communication-based train control system for the fully automatic operation of the new light rail transit link between the cities of Busan and Gimhae.
